This is kinda big news.   I know Steve Singisier mentioned it last night breifly, but it's actually really important.

“Heidi is very interested in running against John Hoeven,” her brother Joel Heitkamp said Thursday on KFGO Fargo-Moorhead's “News and Views.” “Heidi is very much looking into this race."

I am floored.

Heidi Heitkamp is by far the best chance Democrats have to beat John Hoeven at anything.

Full Disclosure, Joel and my dad are good friends, and we know the Heitkamps fairly well.

That being said, I am absolutely floored that Heidi is actually considering a run for Senate.  She ran for governor in 2000 when Hoeven was seeking his first term, and her campaign kickoff in Mantador, ND was one of the first times I had ever been at a political event(there was a rally or something for Tom Daschle a few years earlier when we lived in South Dakota where he autographed a yard sign for me too though, but this was the first real big speech).  Heidi is an amazing speaker and knows what she is talking about.  As Attorney General she was a proponent of the tobacco lawsuits that ended some of the industry's worst abuses.  She just campaigned for and won a statewide initiative to use the tobacco settlement money for smoking cessation(instead of stuff that had nothing to with tobacco use) in 2008.

Her loss in 2008 2000 was attributable to many things, but a significant contribution was her September 2000 diagnosis of breast cancer, which didn't allow her to actively campaign during the most important part of the race while she successfully underwent treatment to remove the lymph nodes.  Despite that, she came closer to winning the office than any Democrat has in 20 years.  Here's the map:

The two important counties that might flip would be cass(Fargo, far east, second from the bottom) and Grand Forks(far east, third from the top).  On top of that, Heidi is probably the one person in the whole state that can rally the base of our party into action.  The Heidi for Senate facebook group has more than either Dorgan or Hoeven, and its three days old.

Markos's polling will provide better answers than my intuition, but my intuition suggests that Heidi would have a better shot than Dorgan would have had at winning that seat.

Heidi is THEE best shot we have at holding this seat.  Show your support.

BONUS!!! I have video. This is Heidi and her brother Joel in Denver for the DNC last fall on the day after Hillary's speech(and yes that is my dad they are talking about.  He had just recovered from a heart attack a couple months earlier).  I'm out of the way around the corner while my counterpart, Chad is filming.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

Any chance Hoevan doesn't run?  Maybe he doesn't want to leave N.Dakota for the Washington DC lifestlye?

setting, not that I'm a ND voter, but that vid made me believe she'd be running for PTA rather than US Senate.  I do understand that that vid was more of a goof-around private thing, but first impressions can come from anywhere.

  •  Is the "2008" in this sentence a typo? (0+ / 0-)

Her loss in 2008 was attributable to many things, but a significant contribution was her September 2000 diagnosis of breast cancer

(I assume that 8 years later, if breast cancer was still hounding her, that'd not bode well for this time around?)

  •  Nice Video. (0+ / 0-)

Seems like a nice person from the banter. Does she have an edge to give her a shot at winning?

After looking at a bunch of races including virginia, it seems that rematches usually dont work out so well.

I would like to see some videos of policy or speech if you got them.

To my knowledge, Hoeven has yet to decide if he wants to seek that Senate seat, right?  If he hasn't yet put his "hat into the ring" for the Senate, I am wondering if he is "doing the math," i.e., determining what would be the likely makeup of the U.S. Senate after the mid-term elections.  Despite all of the talking-bobblehead malarkey about the Dems losing Senate seats in 2010, my humble opinion is that the Dems have good chances to GAIN seats, inasmuch as there are FIVE open GOP seats (N.H., OH., KY., FL. and MO.), where the Dems have good shots at taking several (N.H., OH., and MO. the most likely), and a couple of others (N.C. and LA.) where the GOP incumbants are viwed as vulnerable.  If the math shows that the Dems will break even or gain a few seats in the Senate, does Hoeven want to give up a safe re-election bid for governor of N.D. or win a seat in the Senate where he will be a member of the minority party?

I don't know why someone would want to leave the governorship for a position as a junior Senator from a small state in a minority party that is clinically insane.

Does he really look at John Thune's belabored, folksy Senate speeches and think that is something to aspire? Does he want to get called out by Senator like Al Franken when he is asked to carry water for he party line?

I like ed, but he doesn't play well with conservatives or independents.

The reason Heidi is so good is that people would go out and vote for her.  A lot of us feel like she didn't get a fair chance in 2000 and want a rematch.  This would be that chance, and we would go out in droves to get it.  Heidi would energize the base and carry enough independents to possibly push her over the top.  She is the best chance we have at winning.  On top of that, Ed Schultz doesn't even want to run.  He's looking for excuses.

Trust me.  Heidi Heitkamp is the best shot at winning by a mile.
