The Australian Leukemia Foundation is having their fund raiser called 'The World's Greatest Shave'to support research into the cancer. The people who get involved in this are ordinary people who (in most cases) have been directly affected by the disease or have a family member or close friend dealing with it.
My father died of cancer (not leukemia) some twenty years ago. Who is to say he wouldn't have survived if he had become afflicted later in life after just a few more years of research? There have been some extremely promising developments lately in melanoma research, wherein the genome has been mapped for that particular disease. This will likely lead to more targeted treatment. And less damaging than chemo-radio bombing.
This is where it is personal for me...
About six months ago a long-time family friend, Rita Robinson passed away while undergoing a second round of chemo in the lead-up to another bone marrow transplant. She was a fighter, but sadly she ran out of time. Her daughter-in-law Cheryl has taken up the challenge and is fund raising for the foundation.
I know times are tough, and there are a great many very worthy research areas deserving attention. And I know you have great scientists working on this disease too, but breakthroughs can come from anywhere.
Cheryl's donation target is a very modest AU$2000, and as of writing the total stands at $794. Can the DKos community blow that out of the water?
