Le sigh. Ya know, I've always been a fan of Oliver Stone. Yes, seriously. I think his conspiracy theory movies are fascinating and, well, usually fictional. But that's OK, because we all have our shit to overcome.
But Oliver Stone has just said something so preposterous, it makes me cringe for him (and pretty much for anyone else who hears about this). I know it's a huge shock, but Stone has managed to utter some really stupid crap:
Oliver Stone is no stranger to stirring things up, and his latest provocation -- saying that Hitler was a "scapegoat" and expressing empathy for Stalin -- is, unsurprisingly, making headlines.
Gee, ya think?
"Hitler is an easy scapegoat throughout history and it's been used cheaply," Stone said at the conference. "Stalin has a complete other story. Not to paint him as a hero, but to tell a more factual representation. He fought the German war machine more than any person."
Oy vey. Listen. Oliver. You're kind of missing the point here. Adolf Hitler was a fucking asshole murderer - he initiated the Holocaust. So pardon me if I don't have any fucking empathy for that complete waste of a human being.
Because I don't, just so we're clear.
Also, I think it's ironic that today, the wonderful Miep Gies died. She was an incredible human being, what with hiding Anne Frank's precious diary, as well as the Frank family. Unlike that Hitler guy, who was definitely evil incarnate.
And you're going to try to defend Joseph Stalin, Oliver? Really? REALLY?!
During the late 1930s, Stalin launched the Great Purge (also known as the "Great Terror"), a campaign to purge the Communist Party of people accused of sabotage, terrorism, or treachery; he extended it to the military and other sectors of Soviet society. Targets were often executed, imprisoned in Gulag labor camps or exiled. In the years following, millions of ethnic minorities were also deported.
There's some other nasty stuff about Stalin, too, but I don't want to be a total downer or anything. (Too late, I know.)
Mr. Stone seems to have a huge problem with verbal gaffes (think Joe Biden, but worse):
Anybody who's been through a divorce will tell you that at one point. they've thought murder. The line between thinking murder and doing murder isn't that major.
Huh. I'm glad I'm not his ex-wife.
I do believe that movies are subject to a million interpretations.
Facts, too, or just movies?
I think experience will teach you a combination of liberalism and conservatism. We have to be progressive and at the same time we have to retain values. We have to hold onto the past as we explore the future.
Nuh uh, Stone! You must be liberal! I mean, geez, WTF.
There's an electrical thing about movies.
Yeah, that's SO true.
And then, oh my, there's this one:
If I were George Bush, I would shoot myself. I think he lives in fear of drinking again. There`s nothing more dangerous for America than an ex-alcoholic President who tells you to believe in Jesus.
Goddamn, Oliver. You really gotta chill the fuck out.
