I'm hoping someone can help me out with this:
My sister and her family live in Massachusetts. I recently brought up the Senate race to make sure she knows how important it is that she and her husband go and vote for Coakley. In response, she said she will be voting, but because she lives in such a progressive area (outside of North Hampton), Coakley will win in a landslide, and therefore it doesn't really matter.
I asked what the hell she is talking about. Because it's a statewide election based on popular vote, it doesn't matter what areas Coakley wins in a landslide, as long as she get's more total votes. My sister responded, "Nope, it goes by area. Kind of like the national election, but on a smaller scale."
I searched all over the Internet and could not find anything describing this procedure for Massachusetts or any other state. When I pressed her further, letting her know how weird the process seems, she responded, "I was told that awhile ago. MA is strange with a lot of stuff - kind of made sense for them." Does anyone know what she is talking about?
I'm assuming she's wrong, and if that's the case one of two things happened: 1) She misheard or misunderstood something. 2) Someone is spreading disinformation about the election procedure in order to dissuade people in progressive areas from voting.
Is anyone else hearing this? Is there something malicious going on here, or does my sister need to work on her listening skills?
