I know everyone is caught up in the Massachusetts Senate race (and rightfully so). But I had to Diary something I saw on MSNBC this morning (unless it was already reported) that just knocked me out of my seat.
Sorry for reporting this so late. But I didn't have access to a computer earlier. But this one is sure a doozy!!
This morning on Morning Joe, as Erin Burnett was reading the earnings reports of the nations biggest banks; former advertising executive (and frequent Morning Joe guest; and former host of MSNBC's The Big Idea) Donny Deutsh suggested that, "Maybe the banks should give 10% of their earnings to the people in Haiti" and Ms. Burnett Responded to Deutsch by saying "What would they do with all that money Donny?".
What would they do with that money Ms. Burnett? Are you serious?
That's got to be the dumbest statement of the moment and year simultaneously!
Hello Ms. Burnett!! Have you heard about that big earthquake which may of killed 200,000 people; made 3 million homeless, so that the UN is now implementing the largest humanitarian response in its history for a certain Caribbean Island? Did you hear about that one; just maybe?
Mmmmmmh. Let me think where some of that money could go. There's 100 million meals (the Red Cross says it needs that amount of rations the first 30 days), loads of construction, medical, logistical, clothing, offices, shoes, housing, showers, toiletries, planning, future construction, facilities and government programs, offices and equipment, etc. Ms. Burnett? That's what they need. It will cost tens of billions of dollars (and maybe 10-20 yrs) to rebuild Haiti and have real employment/manufacturing opportunities for Haiti and it's citizens Ms. Burnett. Are you willing to donate your entire salary; since the banks obviously have too much money to give?
Now; I'm not saying Ms. Burnett is a bad person, or she even meant what she said (though many can extrapolate some sundry conclusions by her bird brained statement and apparent callousness). But considering, she's probably not homeless and lacking basic food, water, shelter, facilities and infrastructure in her neighborhood, as many Haitians are. She needs to be more careful and considerate when reporting the news; especially when it's filthy rich Wall St banks who were bailed out to the tune of a trillion dollars by hard working American citizens. To make matters worse/add injury to insult; Ms. Moran broadcast from a city that has the largest Haitian Diaspora population in the world outside of earthquake devastated Port Au Prince (yes NYC has more Haitian and Haitian American's living in the US). Shoot! I thought Donny had a good idea Burnett.
Someone please; download that video, if they have it; and post it here on Daily Kos for the world to see. I know it's our beloved and hated MSNBC. But you got to see/hear it to believe it. Did we all just miss something the past 7 days? Well; it seems Ms. Burnett did.
PS Ms Burnett: CNN just reported that Hugo Chavez of Venezuela is donating 250,000 barrels of oil for Haiti. Mmmmhh. I guess that's because, you don't feel your banker friends would chip in, huh (snark)?
