Tired of the circular firing squads? Tired of liberal angst? Tired of wondering what we can do to send President Obama a sincere, positive message that will help reinforce who we are and what we stand for? Want to demonstrate what even an old, jaded cynic like me considers some real, genuine "netroots" power?
All credit for this idea must go to my Governor here in WA, Christine Gregoire, may she live forever, who posted this on her Facebook wall. Please read on.
Governor Gregoire has asked us to suggest nominees for the 2010 Presidential Medal. The form is here, on the whitehouse.gov Web site.
We are asked to nominate people "who have inspired us." The deadline is tomorrow. The criteria are simple:
* Nominees must be citizens of the United States, as required by the 1969 Executive Order.
* The nominee’s service must have been performed outside of their regular job.
* All questions on this form must be fully answered.
* Nominations must be received by Thursday, January 28, 2010 at 11:59 p.m. EST.
I'm going to nominate the voters of the state of Oregon, who by passing Propositions 66 and 67 yesterday, affirmed their confidence that a government of the people, by the people, and for the people can make those people's lives better.
The vote in Oregon was populism at its finest, and a giant "up yours" to Nike sweatshop billionaire Phil Knight and his nihilist Tea Party allies. Today we are all Oregonians. The voters there made me proud to be an American, and most certainly have inspired me.
Do you think we can get a thousand nominations for the voters of Oregon by tomorrow midnight? Do you think the President needs to hear this message? I sure do, and I hope you'll join me.
