The next time you hear a right winger complaining that one whole year! into Obama's Presidency he continues to blame George Bush for his our problems, remind them of the following quote from Reagan's 1983 State of the Union:

"The problems we inherited were far worse than most inside and out of government had expected; the recession was deeper than most inside and out of government had predicted. Curing those problems has taken more time and a higher toll than any of us wanted."

In Reagan's 1982 State of the Union, he went after his predecessor for blame plenty of times:

"To understand the State of the Union, we must look not only at where we are and where we're going but where we've been. The situation at this time last year was truly ominous."

...

"In the last six months of 1980, as an example, the money supply increased at the fastest rate in postwar history 13 percent. Inflation remained in double digits and Government spending increased at an annual rate of 17 percent. Interest rates reached a s taggering 21 1/2 percent. There were eight million unemployed."

...

"First, we must understand what's happening at the moment to the economy. Our current problems are not the product of the recovery program that's only just now getting under way, as some would have you believe; they are the inheritance of decades of tax and tax, and spend"

...

"Now the budget deficit this year will exceed our earlier expectations. The recession did that. It lowered revenues and increased costs."

But let's face it - can anyone imagine what the media's response will be if Obama says anything like Reagan's 1983 blame shift at next year's SOTU?

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

That is the problem. More and more those who vote in this Country are looking and acting foolishly. For example, the Mid-Terms are coming up and they (Voters) are angry so they want to return the very People to Power who caused this mess in the first place. It's only been a year since OBama has been in Office, 4 Years since the Demos took control of both Houses of Congress and yet they want to return the Rethugs to Power. There is no way that anyone can tell me that the American Voters are smart. Bullshit!! I would probably buy it if they elected Independents, Politicians that are not in either Party and are truly unknown but they don't do that. They are going either Demo or Rethug.

I mean Democrats have not exactly drawn attention to Failed Conservative Policies. In fact, there's been little about the narrative that got us to this point.

We need a solid Leftist narrative from Reagan to now. It's all the same, and it is the problem.

His referral to Cadillac driving welfare queens was an explicit appeal to white racists. I blame Reagan for pushing the meme that the poor in America are responsible for its ills.

All they know was that he smiled a lot and told us we were the good guys and wanted to get government off our backs because no matter how bad things get it could only be worse if those dirty hippies were in charge.

Reagan was elected because Americans don't wait in line for gas.  Or for anything.

The Democrats gained 22 (if I remember correctly) seats in the 1982 election.

Then, there was the 1984 election.

Obama's 'Failed Policies' last night on the boob toob.

    I just about fell down.

Failed Conservative Policies got us here and we had the chance to put a stake into the heart of Cheap Labor Conservative Economics... and we blew it.

Well, I didn't. I mention Failed Conservative Policies in every single political discussion I have.

I also don't let conservatives get away with 'that wasn't conservatism'. They were cheerleading and were in charge. Deal with it!

Anyway, that statement almost knocked me over and it definitely left me very pessimistic about our future.

    •  I loved the part in the State of the Union Speech (0+ / 0-)

where Obama said something to the effect of Republicans calling for tax cuts, and deregulation, he said we tried that for 8 years, and that didn't work out so well did it. So much of what he really said slipped under the radar, because to bring it to the forefront, would not please the Republicans. If people would just stop and think about it for a minute, they would realize Republican policies run wild is what brought us to this point. How quickly people forget and are willing to buy their line. I also think Obama should have hit harder on the media, they are responsible for all of this discontent, giving the loudmouths a forum and not really being fair and balanced. I guess it is not good ratings to play up the positive effects of the stimulus, is it?

They blamed Carter until they could blame Clinton.  That's all they do .... whine and blame like little kids to deflect from what they actually do.

When has a Republican taken responsibility for anything?  They simply rewrite history to skip past the responsibility part.

    •  I seem to remember Clinton and his a (0+ / 0-)

adminstration being blamed by the Bush people, Ari Fleicher in particular for leaving Bush with a recession, nothing was said about the surplus left to him. I also remember a lot of blame for 9/11 placed on Bill Clinton, and his adminstration for no capturing Bin Laden when they had the chance. Obama blaming Bush is probably the most factual blame in the history of the U.S. Squandering the surplus, tax breaks for the rich, instigating the war in Iraq, and even ignoring the memo telling him Bin Laden will strike within the U.S. Blame it on Bush, yes, the Bush Administration is responsible for the economic mess we are in directly responsible. Just how much money was wasted on the Iraq war?
Didn't the Bush people blame Clinton for trashing the White House, stealing the "W" keys from the computers, they even blamed Hillary for stealing from the White House. Petty blame, along with the big blaming too. My short term memory might be failing, but this is ridiculous.

  •  Inheritance..... (0+ / 0-)

Anyone who thinks that there is an exact starting point and finishing point of any Presidential term is fooling themselves.. of course their is inheritance from previous administrations.. Reagan inherited Carter, Clinton inherited Reagan, Bush Sr. inherited.. well you get the picture...

One cannot just pick and choose what you inherited though... it ALL comes from the previous administration.  Now the debate is.. when does the inheritance end and the new administration take responsibility... one year? two years?

    I don't have the answer.

Clearly as a political shield, to CORRECTLY blame Bushco for serious sins would be skillful politics. I'm thinking Obama could use 12-16 years to fix the destruction that Cheney wrought (and don't think they didn't know what they were doing when they were on their joyride of destruction of the middle class)--it took FDR that long. We can amend the Constitution back.

  •  People don't get it. (0+ / 0-)

Reagan didn't just blame Carter--he blamed liberalism, and government in general--and he never let up. He attacked liberal social policy, he attacked liberal foreign policy, he went after unions because they supported liberal causes, he set the stage for the right wing takeover of the media.

It was his primary tactic. Attack, attack, attack. Over and over and over. Everything was because of the liberals. Everything.

Democrats, of course want to look forward, and give the right a pass on all their destruction of the economy and endless wars, because Republicans might get mad at them if they told the truth.
