So, the Westboro Baptist Church, of "God Hates Fags" fame (they also think God Hates America and God Hates Haiti) is picketing the funeral of a fashion designer who died. Not only that, but since this person is affiliated with the singer Lady Gaga, the WBC hates her too.
They're apparently showing God's love by launching a sexist attack and saying she has "blood on her hands" in his death because she is a "proud whore."
Lady Gaga is a very strong supporter of GLBT rights and has participated in much activism.
The outlandish, platinum-selling, bisexual, 23-year-old pop singer was the highest-wattage celebrity to attend both the Human Rights Campaign dinner Saturday night and the National Equality March on Sunday.
She has attended Human Rights Campaign events and many other gay rights marches and meetings. In a lot of ways she appears to be braver than our current so-called advocacy orgs, even our Congress and President.
"ARE YOU LISTENING?" the pop star screamed out to President Obama. "We will continue to push your administration to bring your promise to reality."
In fact a lot of activist groups have criticized her forceful attitude. I'm not sure why. We actually need that kind of attitude if we want to get things done rather than the attitude that lets people make promises to the gay community as a gay rights organization, and then when they get access to the White House, criticize gays for not waiting our turn.
Even our openly gay politicians often say a lot of unhelpful things:
Some in the latter group are political veterans, such as Rep. Barney Frank (D-Mass.), the highest-ranking openly gay political figure in the United States. Last week, Frank said he thought the march was "useless," a remark that was attacked at the rally.
I actually think it's good to have an abrasive voice out there, even if it is an avant-garde pop star whose music isn't my favorite.
It's bizarre to me that conservative anti-gay people and gay organizations both accuse her of being too pro-gay. Obviously the criticisms are somewhat different - gay organizations aren't launching brutal sexist attacks with accusations of complicity to murder, but still it's odd.
Her music itself is interesting and catchy and I try hard to not like her. I don't succeed in that fight.
What we're seeing is your typical "she's a woman and should shut up and keep her legs closed" attack, circa 1950. That's all this is. She's a scary opinionated female who's brave and intelligent. She's aware that sex is awesome and worth having.
This obviously means that God loathes her. We all know how much God loves obedient, subservient women who don't know anything except what Men tell them.
What I don't understand is, why are the Phelps clan even watching or listening to her? Aren't they worried about being taken over by the evil of the television? One minute you're watching reruns of Touched by an Angel, the next you just can't turn away from Lady Gaga singing about paparazzi on MTV. Then suddenly you're on a fast-track to hell.
Always happens like that.
