I know I do, but I need your help to get the job done. Kendrick Meek needs petition signatures to get on the ballot here in Florida. If you live in Florida, or you know someone who lives in Florida, I need you to click here to download a petition, print it, and mail it in.
I need you to sign up to follow Kendrick Meek on Facebook.
And if you can spare a donation, contribute here.
From the Meek campaign:
No Florida U.S. Senate candidate has ever qualified for the ballot through the petition process. By signing your name and helping circulate petitions for Kendrick, you will join more than 100,000 other Florida voters in supporting a candidate determined to earn his place on the ballot, and not simply pay a filing fee.
The Opposition:
Kendrick essentially has two opponents at the moment because the primary isn't for several months. Marco Rubio (Teaparty-FL) and Charlie Crist (Fraudster BFFs-FL) are in an embattled Republican primary at the moment. If you know anything about these two men, you don't want them representing the state of Florida in the United States Senate. Here's Rubio this morning at CPAC:
CPAC's Take On Torture: Ha Ha
When Marco Rubio said in his keynote address that America will capture terrorists and try them before military tribunals at Guantanamo Bay, a man in the crowd yelled, "And waterboard 'em!"
Rubio laughed. "And get useful information from them," he said, laughing.
The crowd laughed and cheered too.
Here's video (note his use of a teleprompter):
Rubio thinks torture is hilarious. Oh, and remember the FL doctor who passed around that photo of Obama as a witch doctor? This should refresh your memory. Well, Rubio didn't feel the need to separate himself from the racist doctor.
Rubio opposed the stimulus:
SPENDING: "I am gravely concerned by a federal government that continues spending money it doesn’t have. In early 2009, I joined Florida’s entire Republican congressional delegation in opposing the $787 billion stimulus bill. In the U.S. Senate, I will support measures like a balanced budget amendment and the line-item veto that will help control the excessive and wasteful spending in Washington that threatens to leave future generations with crushing debt and a country worse off than that of their parents and grandparents."
Check out Rubio on the issues. Let me sum it up for you:
He says he's never voted for a tax increase. He also wants to eliminate the Estate Tax and taxes on capital gains, dividends, and interest. He opposed the nomination of Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor. He would have opposed the McCain-Kennedy immigration bill. He opposes environmental regulation. He wants to drill in ANWR. He is opposed to the Employee Free choice Act and generally despises unions. Oh, and he is anti-choice. Here's his commentary on that:
"I am pro-life. As a state legislator, I supported various pieces of pro-life legislation that, among other things, would require doctors to perform ultrasounds before performing abortions and another bill that would ban the use of taxpayer dollars to fund stem cell research."
Also from his website:
Rubio also helped spearhead Florida’s congressional and legislative redistricting effort in favor of Republicans. You can read about a ballot effort to have fair redistricting in Florida here. The current map pretty much ensures a Republican majority forever. (Rubio is like Tom Delay Jr.)
Oh, and on taxes? Rubio is BFF with Grover Norquist!
Rubio championed a major overhaul of the Florida tax system that would have eliminated all property taxes on primary residences in favor of a flat consumption tax. The effort garnered national attention, with Grover Norquist, president of the fiscally conservative Americans for Tax Reform, praising Rubio as "the most pro-taxpayer legislative leader in the country."
Are you feeling motivated to help Kendrick Meek yet?
Maybe a reminder of what a great candidate he is would help!
There are several issues that are important to Floridians right now - in addition to the job and health care concerns. One of those concerns is funding cuts to NASA. Kendrick addressed potential funding cuts in an Op-Ed recently. Another important issue in the news recently is an attempt by the FL legislature to undermine a Constitutional Amendment, passed in 2002, that limits class-sizes in FL schools. Kendrick talks about why class size is so important here and illustrates the improvements Floridians have seen in schools since this class size amendment passed.
Check out Kendrick's voting record on the issues and you will see that he is one of the most progressive members of Congress. Kendrick is a reliable vote on all of the issues we care about so deeply. He has voted time after time to protect the environment (something Floridians care about because so much of our economy is tourism-based), he has voted to protect Civil Rights and increase protections for those who are discriminated against. Kendrick consistently votes to protect Medicare and help Senior Citizens. He was one of the first Democrats in Congress to speak out about the genocide occurring in Darfur. He went to Haiti just days after the devastating earthquake there (I encourage you to look at his videos of the trip to Haiti). Kendrick has a great voting record on reproductive rights. He has voted to regulate banks and he is acutely aware of the impact of the housing crisis because 1 in 5 FL houses are in foreclosure. He knows that the solution to that problem - and every other problem is NOT further deregulation.
We need voices like Kendrick Meek's in the Senate. He is a strong candidate. He has a history of fighting for Florida and we need to ensure that he continues to fight for Floridians in the future.
