Great news for those of us interested in everyone being treated equally under the law! According to a story in USA Today Online, Massachusetts Attorney General Martha Coakley has filed a challenge to the Defense of Marriage Act, claiming it is unconstitutional.
According to the story:
Coakley argues that regulating marital status has traditionally been left to the states. She also says the federal law treats married heterosexual couples and married same-sex couples differently on Medicaid benefits and burial in veterans' cemeteries.
Hurrah for Massachusetts! Speaking as a native Bay Stater, maybe we can be forgiven now for letting a Republican sit in the same Senate seat that Ted Kennedy occupied for oh so many years. Just as we have in the arena of health care for all, Massachuseans (or whatever we're called) are leading the way in the battle for equity for all!
