This is not inflammatory. If you don't think any sort of peak oil/energy, health, food, financial or climate crisis is coming than you can politely leave this diary.
However, if you are like me and you are beginning to realize that for various reasons our society is going to change drastically in the next 20 years what are you doing to prepare?
PS. Even if you don't believe in widespread collapse in the next 20 years planning is never a bad thing...
Right now my wife and I are trying to find land and a house that we can afford that has a water source and 10 acres. We would ideally like to be 100 miles from any major metropolitan area to avoid the hungry masses that will leave the cities when transportation systems (which will in-turn shut off food delivery and so on..) fail.
Our diets are mainly vegetables right now. I still eat meat and other animal products. My wife is a vegan. She says once its unsustainable to be vegan she will have no problem going back to meat but in the mean time she can cook some really rad meals with pretty frugal ingredients! We are trying to stock pile canned goods, rice, dried beans and we do use them and periodically replenish our stocks. We can tomatoes, cucumbers and other things just to get the hang of canning for long winters.
Power is an unknown. We would like to go off grid but those houses are so expensive now that I would rather buy a house on grid and see if the cost drops with eventual more competition in the solar/wind markets. I wouldn't mind installing a composting toilet immediately since they are reasonable and very practical.
Guns for hunting and protection are a given.
What other ideas are out there? What part of the country are like minded folks looking at?
