Yesterday, I saw a retrospective of Cyd Charisse's musical performances and reflected again on the disappearance of America's confidence--not its arrogance, its confidence; not the confidence to guide others but the confidence to be guided by them. When did we stop building our young nation and start protecting our entrenched one?
Art tells us a lot about ourselves, and in this case, it tells us who we were then and by doing so, it lets us realize who we have become. Musical theater shows us by reflection, that we are an aging society. We are not those people any more; our hope has become cynicism. It is not that our dreams are unfulfilled; instead, they are unsought. We can believe in no solutions to our problems; we re not singing in the rain any more.
