An old friend of mine from Western Massachusetts has started a Facebook group encouraging Rachel Maddow to think about running for US Senate against Scott Brown in 2012.
He started the group six days ago and there are now nearly 1300 members. Nearly 400 members have joined in the last twenty four hours alone.
You can find the link for the 'Rachel Maddow for US Senate in 2012' FB group here.
The description of the group is listed as:
A group of citizens from Massachusetts who think Rachel Maddow would make a strong and articulate candidate for the US Senate in 2012. This group is unaffiliated with, and not authorized by, Rachel Maddow. We're hoping to put this idea in her head, and create a buzz that Massachusetts needs a progressive voice, again, in the Senate, such as hers.
We welcome all members, and our goal is to have 10,000 members by July 4.
For those who do not know, Maddow's home is in the Northampton, MA area, and she got her start in broadcasting on a small local radio station in Western, MA.
Update: a few folks have asked whether or not Rachel has had anything to say on this subject. The answer is that this is an effort to get Rachel to take a look at this and think seriously about it. It isn't really possible for her to discuss this openly right now - not without complicating her life at work. And though I appreciate that many of you/us love watching Rachel on MSNBC, you have to remember that those of us who live in Massachusetts are suffering throught the Scott Brown years. Rachel would get the base excited and fired up here.
