Hello again. This is another one of these photo diary things. Most of these photos were taken the past two afternoons as I strolled around the condo complex here in Oahu looking for birds to shoot just for the heckuva it. I am also including a few other, older, shots that I have recently reprocessed. For example, this one...
North Shore Sunset
Most of the birds you see near sea level in Hawai'i, aside from seabirds, are alien species, birds that have been introduced to the islands by man. The native forest birds were wiped out long ago, primarily by the introduction of avian malaria carried by mosquitos imported by whalers in water casks. I took two shorts walks to bang off some birds photos, here are the results...
Common Waxbill
These small fast moving birds are a challenge to shoot. This is one of my better images of this bird. It is a native of Africa.
Muscovy Duck
Flappin'
Zebra Dove
One of the most common birds you will see on Oahu along with...
Spotted Dove
Both doves are native to Asia.
Plumeria
Red-Crested Cardinal
Also very common. This bird is native to South America.
White-Rumped Shama
This is one of my favorites because of its amazing song. Also I don't see them very often so it is always a treat.
Red-Whiskered Bulbul
Cute little buggers.
I think this is a ginger
Now for the one bird I see on the condo property that is actually here without help from man...
Kolea or Pacific Golden Plover
This is the male that hangs out down at the corner. You can see that he is starting to get his breeding plumage. I will update with some more shots when he gets his full "tuxedo". In mid-April the koleas head off on an amazing journey to the Alaskan tundra to breed and nest.
Kolea
They are quite camera shy. I wasn't able to get any shots of "my" female kolea that usually hangs out in front of my condo. She saw me and flew away.
Here is the male flying off after I trained my lens on him.
Plumeria
That is it for the condo birds and flowers shots. Now for a couple of older things I have recently reprocessed...
