Might it be time to call for a national Limited Constitutional Convention so that we the people, can address some of its fundamental omissions or flaws, so that the amendments can be rightly incorporated into the body of the U.S. Constitution and so that we might address issues which the amendments haven't covered or the Supreme Court has chosen not to hear.
In no particular order of importance - A National Limited Constitutional Convention could theoretically:
- Address (reverse) most provisions of the Patriot Act.
- Serve to completely reverse the Supreme Court's Citizen United decision and codify campaign finance law - i.e., to completely remove private money from elections at all levels of government.
- Mandate single-payer health care for U.S. citizens as an inarguable human right.
- Provide one-time amnesty for undocumented immigrants who've resided in the US for X years; so as not to destroy lives or tear apart families as was unjustly permitted by the US government during the age of slavery.
- Establish reproductive choice for women as an inarguable right.
- Establish a compulsory year-long civil service (nonmilitary) commitment with stipend or tuition/educational loan offset for every citizen aged 19, or upon graduation from high school or college - to provide service in areas and times of natural and other disasters; to assist in preservation and conservation efforts of public lands, water, coasts, landmarks and monuments; to work in our National Parks; to serve/assist in our public schools, Veterans' hospitals and retirement homes; to assist in underserved communities in various capacities; and conversely, to reverse the requirement for mandatory registration for the selective service during peace time or during offensive war time.
- Establish federal mandates for equal access to equal public education via equal school funding, and to mandate a longer school day and school year for primary and secondary public education.
- Revise declaration of war powers for offensive war actions.
- Establish same-sex marriage for all LGBT persons as an inarguable right.
- Establish true protections for human health, the environment (our land, air, coasts, water and waterways) and animals (wild, domesticated and captive).
Have at it.
