I went to a campaign event for Marcy Winograd tonight and met the person I would like to have represent me in Congress. Marcy is running against Jane Harman in my district, the CA 36th, and I am truly impressed with her platform, compassion and commitment.
As a progressive, proud liberal Democrat for over 40 years I have often been disappointed by my current Congressional Representative, Jane Harman. The lack of choice in previous elections often led to a sense of powerlessness and a resigned belief that it's better to vote for the "Devil you know than for the Devil you don't," not a happy proposition. In this election I finally feel like there is a real choice and after having met Marcy Winograd, I know my support will go to her in this primary election.
Integrity and commitment to progressive policies shined through every action I saw Marcy take this evening. In exchange after exchange the ability to engage with and honestly answer the issues of concern to the people present was both refreshing and a courageous example of her authenticity. The hard questions were not ducked, Marcy invited those present to be part of the process and join her in finding uncommon solutions to difficult issues. No grandstanding, no pretense and no equivocation about her core beliefs, this kind of leadership and willingness to listen is an uncommon trait in political discourse and in my view, is much needed in Congress.
The Democratic Party, powerful Congressional allies, powerful special interests and the power of her incumbent opponent have all joined to make this a very difficult challenge for Marcy Winograd; however, votes trump power, votes trump money, and voters have an opportunity now to demonstrate their power and elect a true progressive voice in the CA 36th.
I am not easily impressed; however, this candidate, Marcy Winograd, has impressed me with her courage, commitment and compassion. I hope my fellow Kossacks will support Marcy Winograd. I know, after tonight, that I will.
Update: I was asked earlier to publish this short article again as it got buried during the healthcare debate. I was also asked to provide a link so that fellow Kossacks would know where to go to contribute or volunteer, so here it is:
