It's striking watching the HCR battle from Canada (for a change). It seems we watch too much American TeeVee too, it even infects our politicians.
We have a conservative government in power right now and we had a minor flair-up regarding maternal health, contraception and abortion recently. The conservatives initially tried to go right with the message. But were quickly drawn back towards Canadian center.
From the Globe and Mail
Prime Minister Harper:
"The government is seeking a dialogue with the countries of the G8 to save the lives of mothers and children all over the world....We are not closing the door to any option, and that includes contraception, but we do not want a debate, here or elsewhere, on abortion."
seems the foreign minister was trying to follow his US counterparts on preventing Canadian tax dollars from promoting womens health access in foreign countries that we aid.
This follows the most recent broo-ha-ha about changing the words for the Canadian national anthem to make them gender neutral.....lol...Funny thing is that was about a fix regarding the English version of the national anthem (the original was written in french and has no gender issues as far as the public is concerned). Remember this is coming from the right side of the political spectrum.
Canadian politics is boring, satisfyingly so. Even with our right-wingers in power.....we approach the center of the American argument from the left. I'll move to Scandinavia when our right wing starts to resemble yours and has power.
Thank God not everyone is as crazy as US the congress.
