Despite the number of people who worked for him in 2008 to squeak out a victory against his Republican opponent, Representative Gerry Connolly is now saying he is on "the fence" about whether to vote in favor of HCR.

UPDATE I hear that he is getting more calls and the areas where he is getting them are surprising.

This just came in:

Please call, especially from Haymarket. His office was very surprised (shocked) that Haymarket constituents were calling in favor of health care legislation.

Haymarket VA is considered to be a very conservative place. Please call him. Calling your congressman makes a big difference.

According to his office and someone on his staff, he has been flooded with calls and e-mails telling him to vote NO on HCR.  Connolly represents Prince William County, portions of Fairfax County and portions of Fauquier County in VA.  We need to get him back on our side.

Lots of people in Northern VA worked hard to elect this guy.  He needs to hear from us, not the people who are calling on behalf of the Insurance companies.  They likely did not vote for him and likely will not vote for him in November.  Let's help him to do the right thing.  Make the calls and e-mails encouraging and get him fired up.

More Tagging tips:

A tag is a way to search for this diary. If someone is searching for "Barack Obama," is this a diary they'd be trying to find?

Use a person's full name, without any title. Senator Obama may become President Obama, and Michelle Obama might run for office.

If your diary covers an election or elected official, use election tags, which are generally the state abbreviation followed by the office. CA-01 is the first district House seat. CA-Sen covers both senate races. NY-GOV covers the New York governor's race.

Tags do not compound: that is, "education reform" is a completely different tag from "education". A tag like "reform" alone is probably not meaningful.

Consider if one or more of these tags fits your diary: Civil Rights, Community, Congress, Culture, Economy, Education, Elections, Energy, Environment, Health Care, International, Labor, Law, Media, Meta, National Security, Science, Transportation, or White House. If your diary is specific to a state, consider adding the state (California, Texas, etc). Keep in mind, though, that there are many wonderful and important diaries that don't fit in any of these tags. Don't worry if yours doesn't.

would probably show that the Republicans in his district are very busy.

  •  he may be in trouble (5+ / 0-)

He is another democrat who thinks republicans will re-elect him if he votes no. McDonnell carried his district  last year and he is spooked.
He doesn't get that all he will do is turn off democrats.

are not going to vote for him anyway.  Sure he may be concerned about the independents who he fears may be against the bill, but his numbers are going to be really small in 2010 if he votes against the bill and he may get a strong primary challenger.

3 special elections - the extreme positions of Ken Cuccinelli and McDonald have already taken - the 11th CD - will be just fine for Dems.

The challengers - another nut in Finmian and Herrity - they are going to beat each other up in the Rep primary.

Gerry - will have to work no doubt - but he is trying to get some air time.

I tell you what - Gerry is not on the fence - he would be run out of town by the Fairfax Democratic committee - which is his politcal arm.  Not kidding.

dem in VA will ever be "just fine".  Candidates here have to walk a fine line between fiscal conservatism and compassion and reform.  It can't hurt for him to hear from people encouraging him to vote "yes" on HCR.  Why would you try to discourage people from calling their congressman?

I know the dynamics of the 11th cd - believe me - I am pretty tuned into to the polictics of the area.

Again - He will have to work - but if he votes yea - people will work for him - if he votes no - The fairfax committee will not be happy - and it will not be pretty.

sorry - right now - you have to get your base to vote - not worry about a few swing voters - that was Deeds problem.  Gerry will be in the same boat if he votes no on this thing.

Several years ago there was much controversy about school redistricting around here. This was when Mr Connolly was superintendent of schools here in Fairfax County. Basically, well-to-do people were upset that their children might have to go to high school (South Lakes High School, in fact; remember that lovely Town Hall where Randall Terry was removed calling Howard Dean a murderer?) with poor children, and children of color.
Everyone was dancing around the truth, the wealthy people were pulling out all the stops and using delaying tactics. One woman brought in an American Girl doll and a Bratz doll to illustrate the difference between her daughter (expensive, demure, likelike American Girl doll) and those she would now be exposed to (dark slutty girls with exposed midriff). Gerry Connolly just stood up and said "Let's call this what it is. It's fear and racism, and it's not going to determine school policy. The redistricting stands"
It's a couple years later now and South Lakes High School is still standing, full of a wonderful diversity of kids. It has a very rigorous IB program. My goddaughter was just accepted into Sarah Lawrence on the strength of her IB diploma from South Lakes.
I have admired Gerry Connolly since that day. Hopefully he retains the courage he showed then and will do the right thing now.
I called, hope you will too.

  •  LOL...if he's on the fence... (6+ / 0-)

He will be a one termer. His district is +10 Dem.

I simply don't understand these guys' mentality. Do they really think that right wingers will applaud their maverick ways and vote for them in November? Doofuses.

He acted like he was totally undecided, but I am sure he will vote yes. In fact I think Obama was in his district today, wonder if he was there.

I didn't see him but I can't imagine he wasn't there. I don't recall though if the President gave him a shout out.  I hear that he is getting some heavy traffic from people telling him to vote no.  They are claiming it's too costly.  VA dems have to be careful to appear to be fiscal conservatives.  If they appear to fall into the "tax & spend" caricature, they can be in trouble.  I think that this is what is going on here.  I am asking people to call him and leave positive messages to please vote for HCR.  He needs to hear from us.

      •  I don't believe he was at GMU this morning (1+ / 0-)
        Recommended by:

Surely, if he had been, Obama would have recognized him from the podium as he always has done when there are people around who require such recognition -- that's certainly ALL Members of Congress.

As I sat there this morning, I wondered why there was no local Congress member present.  I hoped his absence wasn't a sign that Obama had neglected to invite him -- I couldn't imagine such a thing.  So, now I'm wondering if he had some other engagement that he absolutely couldn't reschedule. I hope that's it, as otherwise it's not a great sign that he wasn't present.

that's why he wasn't there.  People need to call him and urge him to vote on their side.  His absence says a lot.

My son was a volunteer at the rally.  He said the teabaggers were vocal and rude.  If Mr. Connally thinks any of the counter-protesters voted for him in the past or will vote for him in the future, he is surely wrong.

They had a huge push @ Gerry's fundraiser on St. Patricks day for the rally all of FAIRFAX County Democratic Committee is behind health care went to the rally, etc.

It was chosen for pressure in his district.

I gotta tell you - yes everyone please call - that is not my intent on this discussion - my purpose is if Gerry votes no - it is sucicide in Fairfax County from his Base.
