An equinox occurs twice a year, when the tilt of the Earth's axis is inclined neither away from nor towards the Sun, the Sun being vertically above a point on the Equator. The term equinox can also be used in a broader sense, meaning the date when such a passage happens. The name "equinox" is derived from the Latin aequus (equal) and nox (night), because around the equinox, the night and day are approximately equally long. It may be better understood to mean that latitudes +L and -L north and south of the equator experience nights of equal length.
In 2010, the vernal equinox arrives on March 20 at 17:32 UTC which is 1:32 PM EDT or about an hour and a half ago.
And what does all this sciencey stuff mean?....
Spring has Sprung!!
When last we visited Basement Cat and Ceiling Cat they were locked in mortal combat over the Light. Ceiling Cat prevailed and the light slowly started returning. Then we reached the point where Ceiling Cat and Basement Cat were equal.
"But not anymore!!", sez Ceiling Cat

~Anne Bradstreet
"Autumn arrives in the early morning, but spring at the close of a winter day."

The vernal equinox or Ostara is one of the eight pagan festivals or "sabbats" from the Wheel of the Year. It is a "quarter day" along with the solstices and the autumnal equinox. This festival celebrates the Goddess returning to her Maiden aspect. To all my pagan friends, "Bright Blessings on Ostara!"

And finally, a tribute to Aries, whose sun sign starts today
Aries: People born under this sign have a passion and red-hot energy, which often proves irresistible. It's certainly never boring! Arians are vital, instinctual and young - the zodiac's perpetual children, youths in search of identity. As such, Rams are likely to be joyful, dynamic, assertive, outspoken and brave. They celebrate life. Arians hate constraint, boredom, apathy, and ambiguity.
But remember, above all:
