Now is the time for unity. We stand on the precipice of history with a chance to pass a bill that will realize the largest expansion of health care in a generation. It is now or never, so please hit the phones, take to the streets, call your congress folks. Get it done.
But don't forget for one moment how bad it sucks. It is important that you never actually like this bill. Please do not let this slip from your mind for even a second lest complacency set in.
Of course, while you are keeping the mental image of a shit sandwich firmly in your mind's eye, it is important that you do everything you can to support passage of this bill. If your congressperson is wavering in the slightest, let them know that a primary challenge is waiting for them. If your congress person is committed to voting yes, please remind them that the bill is shit and thank them for their vote.
Your work matters. Together we can change the world this weekend. But don't forget to repeat the soon-to-be Republican talking point (test marketed here) that health insurance is not health care. The two have no relation to each other. In fact whenever possible, please refer to it as "junk insurance the poor are forced to buy" and don't forget to refer to the mandates as "a gun to our head". It is important that we make common cause with conservatives on the ass-leaking shittiness of the bill before we have to run against them in 2010. It will help us to push future reforms if we have lost a bunch of seats in congress and thus have more free time to blog about change.
But I am getting ahead of myself. The first step is getting the bill passed. This is something we can all agree on. That and the fact that we must never ever fall into the trap of taking any step forward without convincing ourselves that progress is something to be ashamed of.
