Representative Jim Himes (D, CT-04) went to the floor of the House and used his time to argue that the vote on health care reform is a question of reaffirming America's moral promise: that we look after our own.
Like many writers, like many pundits, like many other politicians, Jim Himes has spent a lot of time discussing the economic and practical effects of this bill. But on the floor today, Jim Himes made an argument I've seen him make on the op-ed pages of papers back in his district: that it is simply immoral to allow the status quo to persist.
If we are to be true to what is the value of this country -- that we look after our own -- we will finally join the company of civilized nations and say to every American, "We will look after you. You will not die needlessly."
