Nothing says "Yes We Can" like a year-long fight against unreasonable, intransigent opponents who said yes to many of the HCR bill's provisions before they said no.
On this historic day, I'd like to thank the GOP for their unified opposition to reform. For their willful refusal to put any substantial, realistic ideas on the table. For their heedless, almost gleeful, failure to serve the needs of their own constituents. For dumbing down the debate and letting noxious blowhards inflame the worst kinds of passions.
Thank you GOP for holding the country back, constraining mobility and invention, hampering entrepreneurs and manufacturers by locking workers into employer-based health care or shutting them out.
Thank you, GOP, for unifying the Democratic Party like nothing else could have done, for making it clear which party gives a damn about the needs of ordinary Americans and which party seeks only to preserve power (while enjoying gold-standard health insurance for themselves).
Thank you, GOP, for bringing Democrats together to pass an imperfect, but nonetheless powerful bill, and allowing them to deliver historic legislation to the American people.
I'm awfully sorry that voting against this bill is going to hurt you in the fall elections. I can tell that you realize this by the violence of your opposition. I'm sure many of you are hating the lockstep march and wishing you could vote with your reason, your conscience and your constituents.
Too bad. Sorry it didn't work out. Wish you were here. Have a great day.
