So, I mentioned this in a comment yesterday, but didn't get anywhere with it. And, this whole Stupak thing has me thinking more about this logic. The Supreme Court insists that spending money is a form of free speech, right? At least for corporations, right? So, how can the government prohibit people (which are just like corporations) paying money for anything? Heroin, prostitutes, abortions . . . Wouldn't their argument lend itself to this thinking?
Okay, I'm prepared to hear exactly why this won't work, and since I'm not a lawyer, I'm sure there are lots of legal reasons. But, I would love to be able to hear an argument about how buying heroin is a form of free speech. Sure, possession might be a problem, but . .
Okay, so, since they're dragging out this vote until tonight, I wondered if any of you good people out there would be interested in hearing about the movie I'm trying to make. It's called A Sad State of Affairs and is an absurd screwball musical comedy about a delusional street performer who performs on empty country roads who meets a newbie state representative who is determined to reform fast-food drive thru protocol. It's a silly film that serves no other purpose than to make people laugh.
We're shooting the movie in June in the middle of rural Illinois. The film will be entered into lots of film festivals and will eventually be distributed with a Creative Commons license--meaning sharing of the movie is not only allowed, but also encouraged.
I'm a big fan of nonsensical pre-code comedies from the early 1930's and want to try a modern-day micro-budget version of this on a $5,000 budget. Like most indie filmmakers, I only have about one-tenth of this budget, so I'm trying to raise some funds for it on Kickstarter.com. This site collects donations from interested fans in return for goodies like DVDs and autographed memorabilia. I'm also giving away a trip to LaSalle County, Illinois to a big donor. Just so you know, Kickstarter collects pledges of donations, but will not actually collect any money unless I meet my funding goal of $3,500. It's a way to make sure supporters don't get scammed.
I've been trying to make movies since I got neighborhood kids together in my back yard with an 8mm camera in the early 80's. I was a fifth-grader and biting off more than I can chew. I've made lots of shorts--most of them on badly-scratched film. More recently I've been producing promotional videos and authoring DVDs for my employer. This will be my first real feature film and I am excited about it.

If you want to learn more about the project, just visit my Kickstarter page. I've also posted the screenplay online, so you can get an idea of what I'm trying to make.
I sure appreciate anybody visiting the site, and if you're interested in the project but can't make a pledge, I'd still love to hear from you. I'm looking to recruit some musicians who can play 20's style jazz for the songs and score, too. Thanks everybody!
