Aloha to all. This is another one of these diversion diaries. I took a very brief trip to Southern California this past weekend and spent a little time at Bolsa Chica wetlands and on the cliffs of Palos Verdes. These photos are the result. I hope you enjoy them.
Hermosa Beach Pier
Brown Pelican
Brown Pelican
I was a little out of my element and I do not have bird identification books for the mainland so I will be asking for a little help on my ID's in this diary. Even for what are probably ridiculously common little featherbutts like this:
and this...
Is this a Savannah Sparrow?
To continue with some common birds...
Black Phobe
House Finches
Raven
Now to Bolsa Chica and some wetlands birds....
Is this a Godwit?
Snowy Egret

Great Egret
Long Billed Curlew
Long Billed Curlew with Prey
I think this red-eyed little potsmoker is an Eared Grebe.
Is this a Godwit? So many shorebirds...
How about this one?
I think this is a Forster's Tern. Is that right?
One good tern deserves...
American Avocet
A close cousin to our "pink legged silly birds", the stilts.
American Avocet
Great Blue Heron
These astonishingly large birds were nesting in large palm trees on a hill next to the wetlands.
Great Blue Heron
Gathering nest materials.
Red-Tailed Hawk
Ok BW or Lineatus or anyone else.. what is this small raptor being harried by a raven? This is an EXTREMELY cropped photo.
This is California after all...
And now for some non-featherbutt denizens of the suburban landscape of greater Los Angeles...
Alligator Lizard
I grew up in So Cal and have fond memories of these large lizards.
Squirrel
Beggar got a handout. I don't condone it.
Cottontail
Cottontail
Western Fence Lizard (I think)
Thanks for visiting. As always feel free to treat this as a community photo diary and please be good humans.
