I signed up on DailyKos under false pretenses. The purpose of this site is to promote Democratic causes, and yet I am (gasp!) registered as a Republican. Let me explain below the fold....
When I first registered to vote, way back in 1976, I registered as a Democrat. I lived in San Francisco at the time, and was raised in a bipartisan household. Dad was a Goldwater Republican and Mom was a dyed-in-the-wool Democrat. Being raised in a diverse city with a liberal bent, and frankly liking Mom's way of looking at the world more than Dad's, I registered as a Democrat and cast my first vote for Jimmy Carter.
I have over the years never voted for a Republican candidate.
So how did I become a Repulican?
When I moved to Nevada and had to register to vote in my new state, I got the idea to register as a Republican so I could get their literature in an effort to find out what those scoundrels were up to. It seemed like a good idea at the time. This was 1979. There was no internet. Getting the inside scoop was much more difficult in those days. I was a little disappointed that I couldn't vote in Democratic primaries, but even that had its upside. I could vote for the worst possible Republican to draw votes away from the front-runner. This strategy has seemed right for me for many years, until today.
Today, I am heading over to the DMV to change parties once again. I am ashamed to be associated in any way, shape, or form with the Republican Party as it is today. Not even for a joke. Not even as a subversive ploy. They sicken me.
I considered registering as an Independent, but for my Mom, who will be 93 in May, I will once again be a Democrat.
Update: It's official! I'm now a Democrat.
