Despite Gates' desire to provide "a greater measure of common sense and common decency" to what he termed "difficult and complex issues for all involved," the fundamentals of the policy remain in place and the new enforcement measures mostly only relate to the unintentional outing of a service member.
The new guidelines unveiled by Secretary of Defense Gates are like putting a band aid on a hemorrhage.
From my article on AOL News:
The firing of highly qualified, trained and dedicated service members for being gay negatively impacts the effectiveness of their military units, presents a high overall cost to the military and taxpayers, and to many Americans is morally unjust. The new rules won't stop these firings from happening daily.
