During the primaries, Hillary Clinton and others criticized Barack Obama as an "elitist," either explicitly or implictly at times. In addition, Palin and her faux Populism liked to say he was "not one of us," not a regular guy. We all probably remember the bowling fiasco and the argula eating comment. And it's improtant. People want to feel the President understands and cares about the daily problems of regular folks. Well, as Greg Sergent says,
The Obama "out of touch with regular people" meme bites the dust (again) as 56% say he "understands the problems of people like you."
The Plum Line
WaPo Poll results.
He understands problems of people like you. 56 Yes 43 No
He is a strong leader. 65 Yes 33 No
He has brought needed change to Washington. 54 Yes 44 No
He is willing to listen to different points of view. 68 Yes 31 No
These numbers are important. People want a strong leader who they feel understands and cares about their problems. Too many people on Daily Kos, for whatever reason, think people want super-Obama (or they want a hero to worship). Most grown ups are not looking for a super-hero. They want a strong President who cares about them.
Likeability is important. Feeling he cares is important. And feeling he is a strong leader is very important.
These are best numbers I've seen in a long time.
I also think the majority is right. Notwithstanding issue differences from time to time, we have a good person who is President and we and he, together, can make changes that will matter.
