NOT! (Nursing Open Thread) is a community forum hosted by Nurse Kelley to provide folks with a regularly-scheduled interactive place to discuss their health problems, share remedies that have worked for them, seek suggestions, or raise bloody hell about their situation. Everyone is welcome to participate and lively discussion is encouraged. Nurse Kelley's only rule is this: Be kind.♥
What does being a Luddite have to do with health or nursing? In my case, it's a function of disability, living alone, and not having access to teenagers. It also has to do with poor vision, limited income, and my stubborn refusal to create toxic waste every year or two just to have the latest techno-gadgets.
My computer is ten years old. Does that shock you? I've added memory and a new operating system to the original package, but it's the same Gateway I purchased in 2000. The bulky monitor died a few years ago, replaced with a flat-screen monitor much hated by a certain pootie who slept on top of (and fell off of) the old one. I'm on my second printer, third keyboard, and fourth mouse. Same ISP, however.
I thought my Gateway was a goner this weekend. Some evil bug got into it and turned off all security, then insisted the only way I could save my system was to buy something called "XP Defender". When I refused to do that (I may be a Luddite, but I'm not stupid) the evil bug gradually shut down program after program. Nothing would open, including my security systems.
I've since learned that this evil bug is quite common, so I'll tell you how I stumbled upon the way to remove it. It might save you from spending money. I opened the start menu, then the menu of all programs. Trying to "open" any program didn't work, but late yesterday I right-clicked on my security system and selected "run". Voila! I found a weakness in the bug's program! Once running again and told to do a full scan, the security system isolated and removed the nasty bug. After that I did a system restore, choosing the day before the bug appeared, and Nurse Kelley was back in business.
Once I get my cataracts removed this spring I might even learn how to post pictures.
How was your weekend? Does anyone have a computer older than mine?
