We have a bug on the site that's crashing IE8 when you try to load comments for some diaries.
This is a hard crash, not a lockup or freeze; you will see a notification that reads:
Internet Explorer has stopped working
A problem caused the program to stop working correctly. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is a available.
[Close Program]
Reminder:
All IE8 users should set IE8 to always use Compatibility View on dailykos.com. Instructions can be found in the answers to the last couple of questions in the Tech FAQ.
If you are using IE8 and experiencing lockups or freezes, getting Compatibility View notifications, seeing the browser sometimes suddenly reload with a message that disappears too fast for you to read it, or seeing it sometimes "eat" your comments while you're writing them, then you are not experiencing this new issue; setting IE8 to always use Compatibility View with dailykos.com should fix these problems.
New issue:
We've narrowed down the nature of this new crash, but haven't figured out which component of the affected pages is triggering it.
We do have a couple of workarounds for the problem.
Workaround #1:
Set your default comment display mode to "Shrink", and open comments one at a time.
You still won't be able to expand all comments at once in affected diaries; that will trigger the crash. See workaround #2 if you want to be able to expand all comments at once.
- Go to your user page.
- Click the "My Profile" tab.
- Click the "Comment Prefs" link along the top.
- Set the "Comment Display Mode" drop-down to "Shrink", and press the "Save All Changes" button.
Workaround #2:
Temporarily turn off SmartScreen Filter in IE8:
We do not recommend you keep the suggested setting permanently, as it involves turning off a security feature in IE8. Use the workaround if you encounter the problem, but turn it back on when you are done with the affected page.
- Go to the "Safety" menu, then the "SmartScreen Filter" submenu. Select "Turn Off SmartScreen Filter...".
- Confirm your selection in the security dialog that comes up.
- When you are done with the page, use the same procedure to turn this important security feature back on; the submenu item will now read "Turn On SmartScreen Filter...".
Update:
After reviewing the first ~50 posts, I'm adding the following points; hopefully having them right here in the body of the diary will spare our more technically inclined users the burden of repeating them in the comments:
- IE Sux!
- Firefox rules!
- Chrome rules!
- Get a Mac!
