Well, once I stand (metaphorically) before you, having promised to review a chapter of Gina Kolata's Rethinking Thin, but being unable to deliver. Unlike a couple of weeks ago (when I just flaked on writing it), I have an explanation or at least an excuse. Follow me past the explanation of WHEE and over the jump for more...
WHEE (Weight, Health, Eating and Exercise) is a community support diary for Kossacks who are currently or planning to start losing, gaining or maintaining their weight through diet and exercise or fitness. Any supportive comments, suggestions or positive distractions are appreciated. If you are working on your weight or fitness, please -- join us! You can also click the WHEE tag to view all diary posts.
The explanation:
Yes, I had overtime again this week. I didn't expect to have to work both days of my usual "weekend" (Tuesday and Wednesday) - in recent months, we've wrapped up our usual "month-end" workload by the 5th or 6th day of the month. I figured I would get today (Wednesday) off and bang out a quick review by this evening, but we still had work piled up this morning, so I spent over nine hours in the office.
Since we haven't had a WHEE diary since NC Dem's Monday diary, I thought I should at least put up an Open Thread to keep the WHEE spirit going as much as possible.
Trans-fats - even worse than we thought?
I wish I had more time to comment, because I've run into several stories over the past week that are definitely worthy of more attention. For example, according to Leah Zerbe of Rodale (by way of MSNBC), trans-fats are particularly bad for women with coronary heart disease.
Mineral makeup - not so grate, akshully
An acquaintance of mine, a woman in her late 20s, has discovered that the "pure minerals" makeup she chose over more conventional makeup uses crystalline bismuth to help give the makeup a special shine. Unfortunately, those bismuth crystals caused her to break out in a big way, and she's found out that this is a problem that a number of other women have encountered.
