Well we won the battle of the Michigan UP Congressional District without firing a shot. Rep Bart Stupak will retire after 18 years of fighting for getting every zygote to become a human being and that is what he will be remembered for...

Very interesting and exciting debate here...I am usually on the side of being pragmatic with others saying we need to be purists...the tables are turned in this diary!!! Anyway, the reason for my opinion that it is good Stupak is retiring, is that he was going to lose anyway, he alienated his anti-choice base and liberal/moderate base at the same time and the Republican/Teabaggers were going to make this a national race...so having a fresh face gives us a chance...now lets make it happen!!!
Of course the radical anti-choice crowd gets an assist on this one by providing death threats on a faux charge of Bart Stupak killing babies...
President Obama received 50% in this CD, so it is not a lost cause for Democrats. Part of having primaries is to keep pressure on marginal representatives that they do not get a free ride. The more we primary, the harder it is to not listen to the base. In fact, part of Rep Stupak, worked so hard for a compromise IMO was the primary challenger for his seat.
In a cycle that is very anti-incumbent, it is not a bad time to run with some fresh faces in marginal districts, we may still lose the seat but we might have a better chance of holding the seat too...
So will we hold the seat, don't know, but we still need to be vigilant and primary strategically for the sake of our party and our country.
