Speaker Nancy Pelosi released the following statement after final passage of H.R. 4851, the Continuing Extension Act of 2010, extending temporary unemployment and health benefits for out-of-work Americans. The bill now heads to the President's desk for his signature: "Since the start of the recession, unemployment insurance and COBRA health benefits have provided a lifeline of security for the millions of Americans struggling to find a job, care for their families, and pay the bills. Many are out of work through no fault of their own, and it is up to our nation's leaders to stand up for the interests of every American and extend vital assistance to our hardest hit families until they get back on their feet."

Secretary of Labor Hilda L. Solis issued the following statement regarding her meeting today with President Obama on the West Virginia mine disaster: "Over the past week, I have spent time with the families of the mine workers who were killed at the Upper Big Branch mine. The miners who perished were husbands, fathers, sons, brothers, uncles, nephews or a friend to someone. These men worked hard to put food on the table and support their families. They lived by a simple covenant: If they worked hard and did a good job, their employer would do everything necessary to maintain the highest safety standards so they could go home to their families after every shift."

Up to 1,000 Amnesty International Students and Activists Converge on NYC to Demand Human Rights:
Up to 1,000 human rights activists will travel from Massachusetts to New York City on Friday, April 16th, for a full day of activism on human rights abuses in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Burma, Sri Lanka, Tibet and other countries. Amnesty International Group 133 (of Somerville, MA) comes to New York for the 15th Annual "Get On The Bus for Human Rights (GOTB)." Since its inception, GOTB has grown from 30 participants to more than 1,000 dedicated volunteers who arrive by train, bus and car to protest human rights abuses around the world at locations in New York City including consulates, missions, the United Nations and corporate headquarters.
