I have been watching the season premier of Dr. Who, and Smith is brilliant in the role. He has the energy of Tom Baker, and the passion for the role. Not as snappy of a dresser, but that is OK.
I have fallen in love with Amy, his new companion. She is just dishonest enough to be extremely resourceful. She is played by the hauntingly beautiful Karen Sheila Gillam, just 22 years of age.
In many ways Amy resembles Leela, the companion of Tom Baker. The red hair and long legs remind me of Leela very much, but note that Amy wears real hose, with the hems very nicely behind her well formed calves and thighs. But enough of that.
This premier went well, with The Doctor still recovering from regeneration (it is a very difficult process, and this time he remembered who he was, which has not always been the case). The TARDIS also regenerated, in keeping with my idea from a long time ago that she was not just a mechanical device, but a fusion of a living spirit with a machine. Folks do not talk about it much, but The Doctor's TARDIS is most likely the last one that exists, the Master's one being lost when he was, and it was a primitive one. It is a Type 40-B, whilst the original Master's one was a Type 40-A. That was important in the classic series, because the dematerialization circuit on the Master's TARDIS would not work on The Doctor's. The Time Lords finally sent him a new, workable circuit for work done well one.
I will take this opportunity to say that I did not like the storyline as Tennent went away, making the Time Lords evil, killing folks. That could have been done better, but with no TARDIS I can not change the script.
I really like this new Doctor and his companion. The previous Doctor became too withdrawn and lonely, and believe me, I know that The Doctor needs companions. Not in a sexual way, but in a shared experience way. He also chooses only very bright folks, and ones that he can trust. Amy will be an excellent companion.
Please comment very liberally about your takes on the new series, and also about your favorite bits of the classic ones. I will share this one with you. During the Tom Baker (THE REAL DOCTOR) years, he said something obscure and his companion asked how he knew it.
"I learnt that from mescaline!" he retorted. Tell me a better answer! That was perfect.
Dr. Who has evolved from a children's show in 1963 to become a very interesting science fiction program here. I must say that the Golden age of Dr. Who was as Pertwee was leaving, and Baker (Tom) taking over the role. I would very much enjoy your thoughts on the show.
We are at a crossroads now, though. This is the 11th Doctor, and Time Lords can only regenerate 12 times for a total of 13. One of the Colin Baker episodes already explored the 12th one for The Doctor, so we are running out of bodies quickly. I think that the producers need to regenerate Gallefrey to have a workaround.
Warmest regards,
Doc
