I'm currently residing in Santa Fe, New Mexico, and while I do love this city I miss the Bay Area, where I grew up. I decided some months ago to move back home. I haven't had a car for about 8 years now, so moving presented some problems. I do have a license, but renting a uhaul is rather expensive, and I work in a shipping department, so I worked out that shipping my stuff and getting myself out there another way would work best, and cheapest.
So I decided to ride my bike.
It may seem a bit intimidating to ride 1200+ miles on a bike, alone, but I've ridden my bike for so many years now, for various jobs and just as a commuting vehicle, that riding a good 40-60 miles a day for a month sounds just about like heaven.
Luckily for me I work at a bicycle part distributor. That means I can get the stuff I needed to tour for very inexpensive prices, which made the prospect of touring imminently affordable, a key part in any decision I had to make.
So I'm riding home to the Bay Area.
My next challenge was choosing a route. I've been trying to decide between taking the southern and Northern route. Either through Arizona then up the coast, loosely following the old route 66 then up 1 and 101; or, going through Colorado, Utah and Nevada. I'll admit that I'm a bit scared of going through the Rockies, but I've never been through that part of the country and thought it would be nice.
Any doubts I've had about taking the Northern route are now gone because of the boycott of Arizona over the racist "immigration" law. I will not support a state that is so outrageously authoritarian and racist. It's unfortunate because I have family there and would have liked to see them.
Over all I'm very excited, I can't wait to bike the Rockies and see Utah and Colorado.
