I am tired of hearing about the teabaggers and Sarah Palin. Are many of them racists? Of course there are/ It is hard to fathom that anyone who finished the fifth grade takes those people seriously. Their notoriety says more about our media and culture than it says about them. Hyperbole sells.
I for one am done apologizing for what we have accomplished in a little over a year. This Congress with all its faults has accomplished more for America than any Congress since the 89th Congress which passed medicare, major civil rights legislation and instituted an anti poverty program. What did the Republicans do when they were in charge. They sold our country to the highest bidder. They did not preside over a Congress but an auction house.
I am tired of hearing that my President is un American. I take it personally, because I support him and I am more patriotic than any screaming idiot doing the bidding of special interests and their amen chorus on talk radio and Fox News. It is time Democrats articulate the many accomplishments of this Administration. It is time to get the Obama shirts out of the closet and wear it with pride.
On the economic front both GM and Chrysler have been saved and are beginning to become profitable. That holy grail of the Republicans, the stock market is climbing after the bottom fell out during their watch. Unemployment is still too high and more has to be done. But imagine if we had listened to the Republicans and not passed the stimulus. Think of the green jobs that are now being created because of it, or the roads that are being fixed. How many more of you and your neighbors would be on food stamps? I guess helping to save our manufacturing base is not something to take pride in according to the Republicans. I guess they think we would be better off if only GM and Chrysler had been liquidated. Their main complaint is that we are not cleaning up their mess fast enough.
Do you think health care would have been discussed in a McCain Administration? Not only have we discussed it to death, but for the first time a national health plan for all Americans passed Congress. Is the plan perfect? Of course not' but it is a good start. Eventually this country will have decent health care for all of its citizens because of what the Democrats did alone.
On the foreign policy front, America is being respected again by the rest of the world. Our President is a leader and not an worldwide joke. Already the threat of nuclear annihilation is being lessened. We are beginning to wind down Bush's lie in Iraq in a responsible manner. The world is still a very dangerous place, but at least America is not now part of the problem.
We are also trying to bring sanity to the financial markets to avoid another meltdown. Do you think a Bush led SEC would have brought charges against Goldman Sachs. Their idea of financial reform is to let the big banks and brokerage house continue to fleece America.
Much has been accomplished. Much still needs to be done and the solutions will be debated on this site and elsewhere. It will take a long time to fix the damage the Bush Administration caused this country, but we have made an excellent start. We have nothing to be defensive about. It is time the Democratic Party get that message across to this country. America is coming back thanks to the Democratic Party.
