Last year I posted this diary on the 29th anniversary of this momentous occasion. I'm reposting this diary today so that we can remember this extremely important military operation.
I apologize if this has been posted already but I just arrived in New Orleans getting ready for the Jazz Fest and only now do I have the time to create this diary.
Thirty years ago yesterday, April 25th, 1980, in the Iranian desert, a US military operation to rescue hostages taken in a raid of the US Embassy by Iranian students was aborted by President Carter and gave rise to the GOP and the conservative movement lead by Ronald Reagan.
Those of you born after this date please look into Operation Eagle Claw, its official operative name, more commonly referred to as the Iranian Hostage Rescue Attempt. I think its one of the most important events in US history, certainly post WW II and post Vietnam. Had the attempt succeeded in rescuing the US hostages and returning them to safety in the US prior to the presidential election of that year, President Carter would have likely succeeded in his bid for reelection and Reagan and the conservative movement would have been put to bed, likely for a very long time. Remember that Reagan was, at the time of his election, the oldest person to take the oath of office.
Operation Eagle Claw failed miserably in the desert due to a number of unforeseen circumstances that befell the military forces called forth by Carter. Seen as inept, Carter fell under the GOP noise machine to an articulate actor and former governor from California.
The 30th anniversary, should be marked as a special day for all concerned with this country and the direction it has taken since the Reagan years. Had the mission been a success, do you think we would have had Bush I, Bush II, the second coming of Dick Cheney, a war in Iraq, 9/11, Afghanistan, et cetera? Think of all the things that have transpired since the conservative years of Reagan and the conservative cabal.
The following article by Mark Bowden in the Atlantic provides a detailed description on the operation.

Please expand on this as you see fit and let's create a dialog about this event and how it has shaped the world as we know it today.
