Briefly
I am a married man and have two children, ages 8 & 11. My wife and I were planning on a summer vacation to Arizona in a few months to:
a) visit my aunt and uncle and
b) to tour the grand canyon
This will no longer be happening.
My wife and I discussed it last night and we simply decided we didn't want to risk getting pulled over and humiliated in front of our children. It wasn't worth the risk or the trouble of explaining to the kids how Arizona is kind of like a third world country.
To be sure, the chances of us being pulled over are fairly small. I mean, we're a "white" family driving a "nice" car. But if what I've heard is true, and no racial profiling will be used by the AZ police, then we have as good a chance as anybody of being pulled over and searched.
I find it hard to believe I would need my passport to travel from California to Arizona, but that's how I understand the new law. I would need more than my driver's license. It's not worth the hassle!
So I get deprived of visiting some cool relatives and my kids are deprived of seeing the Grand Canyon from the best vistas.
Bummer.
