Today, my opponent for the U.S. Congressional seat in Florida’s 5th district, Virginia Brown-Waite, announced that she will not be seeking re-election due to health reasons. While I wish Virginia the best and keep her well-being in my prayers, I feel that this is a moment of opportunity for the residents of Florida’s 5th district. After eight years of dysfunctional leadership, we have the ability to finally restore common sense to our district.
Our district has languished under Virginia’s leadership and frankly, we can’t afford more of the same. Our unemployment is hovering around 14%. More than 25% of our youth have to subsidize their grocery bill with food stamps. The tale being written by Virginia, for Floridians, doesn’t have to have the disappointing ending that we currently see being written. Our future can be one of promise. Our future can be one where only the poorest among us have to utilize government assistance. Our future can be one where we all have a job, where we can all save for college and where we can all provide a better future for our children.
We can do this by making sure that our broken financial system is fixed. There are many ways that we can reform the financial industry. We can create safe guards against the collapse that has put so many of us in a precarious position today. We can do this without bailing out Big Banks and Too Big To Fail corporations.
We can do this by bringing jobs to the 5th district. We can join in and lead the way with green manufacturing jobs. While we don’t all have to have solar energy here in the 5th district, there is no reason why we can’t be the manufacturers that create the solar panels for world-wide consumption. We don’t have to have wind-power off of our coasts, but that doesn’t mean we can’t have the factories that make the blades that power windmill farms across the globe.
It is time for the 5th district to return to common sense leadership. We can do this; we just need your help. Please visit my website, www.jimpiccillo.com. Your donation today can go towards paving the road towards a better tomorrow. We can turn a red district, blue.
Yours in service,
Jim Piccillo
