Good morning GUSsacks, supporters, and country bumpkins. My laptop is under the evil spell of Norton, and may be slower than usual in offering responses of blazing wit.
Like other community diaries at Daily Kos, we at GUS strive to avoid the realm of the political, aside from the most extremely obvious references.

Okla. governor signs smoke room rebate into law
Associated Press May 7, 2010 By SEAN MURPHY
Oklahoma restaurants that built separately ventilated smoking rooms would be eligible for a cash rebate if they become smoke-free under a bill signed Friday by Gov. Brad Henry.
Dubbed the Clean Air in Restaurants Act, the bill allows restaurants to recoup 50 percent of the original expenditure, minus depreciation costs, if it converts to a smoke-free restaurant by January 2013.
"Secondhand smoke is a proven hazard, particularly for children, and the more we can do to reduce it, the better for the overall health of Oklahomans," Henry said. "This is pro-health, pro-family legislation that everyone can support."

Not terminated, but vetoed: bill on public smoking
May 04, 2010|By Patrick McGreevy, Los Angeles Times
Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger on Monday vetoed a measure that would have banned smoking at state parks and beaches, calling it "an improper intrusion of government into people's lives.''
Schwarzenegger, whose cigar habit led him to build a smoking tent at the state Capitol, said in his veto message that the proposed regulation, which would have been the most far-reaching tobacco legislation in the nation, went too far. Such rules should be left up to cities, counties and local park officials, the governor said.

Smoking linked to sleep problems in children
NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Mothers who smoke during pregnancy are more likely to have children with sleep problems from birth all the way through age 12, new research shows.
"The more cigarettes that mothers smoked during pregnancy, the more sleep problems the children had," Dr. Kristen Stone of Women and Infants Hospital in Providence, Rhode Island, one of the study's authors, told Reuters Health.
What's more, while most of the women who smoked during pregnancy used at least one other drug, Stone and her team found that nicotine was the only substance associated with sleep problems.

Smoking while driving with kids could lead to fine
Associated Press Law enforcement agencies in Arkansas said Thursday that officers are going to start enforcing a law that bans smoking in vehicles with young children.
The law, which was passed by the Legislature in 2006 but is just now being enforced, prohibits smoking in a vehicle that has a child younger than 6 or weighing less than 60 pounds as a passenger. Violating the law can generate a $25 ticket.
Those pushing the law say the purpose is to reduce the exposure of young children to secondhand smoke, which can lead to health problems including asthma attacks, respiratory infections and sudden infant death syndrome.

Mothers' smoking or depression 'influences teens' smoking'
Washington, May 8 (ANI): A new study has suggested that adolescents aged 12 to 17 living with mothers who are current smokers or who have had a major depressive episode in the past year, are more likely to smoke.
The study was sponsored by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) as part of its strategic initiative on data and outcomes - an effort to create integrated data systems that help inform policy makers and providers on behavioural health issues.
The new study shows that adolescents living with mothers who currently smoke were nearly three times more likely to take up smoking than adolescents living with non-smoking mothers (16.9 percent versus 5.8 percent).

Smoking can be hazardous to your house
May 8, 2010 Chicago NEWS-SUN
Cigarettes can be dangerous in more ways than one, as two suburban fires last week illustrated.
In Long Grove, a lit cigarette discarded into a flower bed ignited mulch, causing flames that spread to the home.
The owner escaped unharmed, but then returned to the smoky building to rescue his dog.

Leyland vows to abide by smoking ban
ESPN.com news services
Facing the Angels, Jim Leyland turned toward the angel on his shoulder Saturday.
The Tigers manager, a devout cigarette aficionado, took on the specter of Michigan's public smoking ban for the first time when Detroit hosted Los Angeles at Comerica Park, a 3-2 victory thanks to Johnny Damon's ninth-inning solo home run.
The law took effect at 6 a.m. ET and applies to nearly all public workplaces in the state.
"I'm a law-abiding citizen, so it's just the way it is," Leyland said Friday, according to The Grand Rapids Press. "We're not supposed to smoke here, and I won't do it. I'll try to find someplace outside somewhere, I guess, but I think you're not supposed to smoke at all in the park."

I'm not sure if this news thing will be my regular weekly feature, but it's a nice alternative to fall back upon, when my soul isn't trumpeting forth fire 'n brimstone against big tobacco. Or the urge to smoke.
