WHEE (Weight, Health, Eating and Exercise) is a community support diary for Kossacks who are currently or planning to start losing, gaining or maintaining their weight through diet and exercise or fitness. The first Friday of every month, in a little upstairs dance studio, there is a very cool thing going on. The space is gently lit, mostly dark, and the mirrors are draped. Our teacher Carrie is there preparing for the evening. Music to move to is playing on a good sound system. The floor is a reliliant black material that feels good to bare feet, though some dance in socks and some in "dance" shoes. In ones and twos and threes, folks start showing up, leave their money in the pot (sliding scale fee, 15 to 25 bucks,) their water bottle just outside the door and start moving to the music.
The class is very minimally guided, the music thoughtfully chosen. It is a great workout but really it is something much more. The space feels contained, and comforting in that way. No matter wild the dancing gets, we are always gently held by the space. And it can always be that way for us, we can carry that with us. That is only one of the lessons of the Five Rhythms.

One of the beautiful things about this happening is that there are all kinds of bodies in this sacred space, moving, flowing, dancing - together but also separate. As Carrie said last night, "Notice how you can be so filled up and so empty - at the same time." It is a beautiful way to connect - with yourself, your body, other beings and the universe. I encourage you to seek it out and if you want it, I hope you find it. I think it is the kind of thing that is going on that is not necessarily advertised.
I can only stick around for an hour or so before I head off into my day, but I will be checking back in this evening.
