Utah's Republican party is holding its convention today. Utah's party convention system is discussed in more detail here, but in short, candidates who obtain over 60% of the votes from the 3,500 delegates attending the convention become the party's nominee with no primary. If no candidate obtains 60% of the vote, the top two candidates proceed to a primary where voters then select the final candidate.
According to polls of delegates, Senator Bennett is in third place, far behind the top polling candidate, Mike Lee. Unless Bennett can somehow slip into second place today in the convention, he will not even appear on the ballot in November. Bennett's popularity with the delegates is low, but statewide Bennett polls favorably. In fact, a Salt Lake Tribune poll found that Bennett would likely be reelected if he were to be nominated by the GOP. The poll also found most Republican voters statewide prefer Bennett to other Republican candidates (including Mike Lee), and that Bennett performs the best in hypothetical matchups with likely Democratic candidates.
It looks like Utah voters won't get the chance to vote for a candidate most Utahns support. The Tea Party is about to claim a prominent victim.
