A very large number of missiles were fired at a house and a number of vehicles parked outside.(
http://www.thenews.com.pk/... ,
http://www.dawn.com/...). At least 8 people are counted dead so far. These "drone swarms" are not common at all. While there has been no word on the target of the strike it is in a region of North Waziristan close to the Afghanistan border and thought to be infested with a number of militant groups including al Qaeda Central. It's not clear how many vehicles were parked outside, meaning it could be as low as two.
Update:( http://www.google.com/... ): It's said to be a training camp.
This is the second drone strike in the 3 days and comes at a time on renewed pressure on Pakistan to deal with the situation in North Waziristan. This pressure is increasingly coming from a large segment of the Pakistani population given Hakimullah Mehsud and the so-called "Punjabi Taliban"(really just an orgy of non-Pashtun Pakistani militant groups ) maintaining a presence there. However, the pressure has mounted even further in the wake of the NY-Times Sq. incident as the U.S. pressesfor an offensive by the Pakistani army.
However, Pakistan is unlikely to move against the militants in North Waziristan in the near future as they are still trying to press an offensive against the Pakistani Taliban in the central part of the Federally-Administered Tribal Areas north of North Waziristan. 9 Pakistani soldiers, including 2 officers, died early this week during the operation in Orakzai agency.( http://www.dawn.com/... )
In the meantime, the U.S. can be expected to continue targeting the region. With only two exceptions that were right near the border with North Waziristan, every CIA drone strike of the year has been in North Waziristan.
