I know, I know. How dare I? Nixon? That terrible boogeyman of times past. I'm sure you younger liberals heard awful stories about how Nixon would come steal your allowance if you didn't do what your parents said.
But we must ask what Nixon would do because he played the type of political chess we need to play to spin the misery of 2010 into political gold.
We must fan the flames of the bubbling civil war in the Republican field. To do this we must cast aside purity tests and make political decisions. In this war, we must win by any means necessary.
And we can win amigos. We can win. There is a path to victory where 2010 can turn out to stun the pundits and Republicans. Don't you want to see the shock on their smug faces when this isn't 1994? Wouldn't you do anything to see it?
You will have to do anything...but it can happen.
My road map to Republican demoralization.
Remember, this is a war. Any means necessary. If you would rather lose and hold your head high as you fall on your ideological sword, don't read any further. War, as Patton said is about making the other dumb bastard die for his country. I have no desire to lose honorably.
In Kentucky: Conway must move right and make a backroom deal with McConnell. This can happen. McConnell is under fire from Paul and the Tea Party. His candidate was rejected. He would rather have Conway for six years and try to oust him later than have Paul usurping him with help from other McConnell enemies. Mitch just needs cover for abandoning Paul. Conway moving right, especially on foreign policy will allow McConnel, Grayson, and the establishment to judge Paul too dangerous to win. It will make Conway move right on Iran, Iraq, and Afghanistan. Probably Gitmo too. But it would destroy Paul and split his support. If Conway wins the Pauls and the Tea Party will be humiliated. That is worth it.
In Florida: We must get behind Crist quick! I know, we have a candidate. Meek can't win. This is 3D chess. If Crist gets the Democratic vote and his moderate Republican vote, then he will defeat Rubio. The Tea Party will take another body blow. The narrative of 2010 will be further written in the direction of a national rejection of conservative extremism. Crist won't say or do everything Dems like. But Crist will owe his success to Dems and he'll find no friends in Republican circles of the Senate. Leaving him likely to caucus with Democrats. Sure Meek must be sold out. But is loyalty to Meek worth risking the country having Rubio as a senator and a vindicated Tea Party? No way.
These are just two races where we can go Nixonian on their asses and split the GOP down the middle to our advantage. If Democrats win these two races it will deal a severe blow to the Tea Party and increase bitterness b/w both sides in the Republican war.
Even if Republicans gain seats (highly likely) overall, if the big races go to us and lead both sides in the Republican Party to blame the other, then we've won the day.
