This story was sent to me via email from The NORML Newsletter:
The Prince of Pot, Marc Emery, will be extradited to the United States. It will happen imminently, according to his attorney.
The DEA finally nailed the bastard for selling pot seeds via the mail. Their struggle has been going on since 2005. They must be feeling their oats (avena sativa) right about now.
Emery has always maintained that his extradition was politically motivated. The nerve of that arrogant pothead! Probably paranoid from all those cannabinoids he's ingested.
Gee, what will become of his television station? His political party? His paraphernalia shops? Can they manage to survive without him? One wonders.
BTW, he paid the taxes on his profits to the penny ... in full
The heart of the matter apparently is this: they're carting Marc's carcass down here to do up to five years in prison, and that's after plea-bargaining the deal. As a canadian citizen, Emery would, upon conviction, be given a month in the can, with follow-up probation. That's all!
Canadians cannot believe one of their own has essentially been sold out by the government. This is compounded by the substantial disparity of the sentences. Protests have been lodged with Canada's Public Safety Minister over it.
The DEA asserts that it has dealt a blow to the movement to legalize pot in this country. It claims to have eliminated a source of funding for the legalization lobby here. Emery was indeed a generous benefactor to anyone working for reform of marijuana laws. Who knows? Maybe he was the biggest donator.
Keith Stroup, Legal Counsel for NORML can provide more details to those interested. His number is (202) 483-5500.
[ADDENDUM: Now that I think of it, Marc never tried to tell his customers that the seeds they were buying were legal. He always gave them a caveat as to what would happen to them if they were ever caught!]
