Last night was a great night for progressives. In PA and KY, we had 2 senate candidates win who were pro EFCA, pro public option. We confronted the democratic establishment and won in red and purple states. We also forced conservadem Lincoln into a run off with another vote for the public option. On the republican side, we saw an anti federal reserve candidate defeat a standard McConnell endorsment in his home state. And the icing on the cake was that the GOP got blown out in a seat they had to win.
But noticably absent from the reform the democratic party movement were issues of the endless wars, civil liberties, and the need for green jobs.
While it's important that we put Bill Halter over the top against Blanche Lincoln, we have a big opportunity to elect a real grassroots, anti war, single payer, civil libertarian, green new deal democrat. Marcy Winograd.
In addition to all the good news for democrats and progressives, last night also showed some shockingly poor results for corporate democrats with no name opposition.
Paul Kanjorski got just 49% in PA11. Anti HCR democrat Tim Holden got just 65% of the vote against a challenger who has raised a whopping $0.
People are clearly angry and very willing to turn out against the establishment candidates. This is why Marcy Winograd has a real shot. A recent poll shows that incumbent blue dog Jane Harman has just 43% support in the primary, and has Winograd winning 70% of voters who've formed opinions of her. Marcy has picked up several organized labor endorsements and could really pull off an upset. If we can take down entrenched incumbents at the senate level in red and purple states, we should be able to do it at the house level as well.
We might've won a few battles against corporatocracy so far, but we need to keep the momentum going over the winnable primaries and into the fall against the republicans.
A win by Marcy would send a message to every democrat in the house that endless wars, handouts for polluters, and chump change for the middle class isn't gonna cut it in todays environment.
Sodonate, volunteer for Marcy.
