Sue Lowden's fondness for the barter system now becomes clear. Steve Benen reports:
This week, we learned that Lowden's campaign bus, an RV worth more than $100,000, was donated to her by a former casino owner who supports her Senate bid.
"Let's talk about my RV," she told a local reporter. "It was donated. I'm really fortunate. Anyone could have had an RV if they had a supporter who wanted to donate."
Of course, as Benen points out, there are legal limits on campaign donations. An RV worth $100,000 is some $95,000 over those legal limits.
To try to spin her way out of the mess, Lowden changed course yesterday, and said she "misspoke." The RV wasn't actually "donated" after all, the Republican candidate insisted.
Once again, Lowden finds herself backtracking on something she said. Once again, she proves herself a liar. It seems her name is on the title. She told KXNT-AM that it's only a private lease.
KTVN:
She says her name was on the title for registration purposes.
But a Department of Motor Vehicle spokesman says a person can't be on a Nevada vehicle title without being its owner.
In other words, she owns it. And she lied about owning it. And it was given to her as a campaign contribution. And such an expensive campaign contribution is not legal.
Benen:
The Republican Senate hopeful in Nevada, who clearly hasn't had a particularly good spring, seems to have proven herself not quite ready for prime time.
To say the least. She is a liar. And she breaks campaign laws. And her fondness for systems of barter makes one wonder what she was planning to exchange for such an expensive and illegal gift.
Perhaps Chuck Schumer should hold off on ordering drapes for the Majority Leader's office. Lowden is imploding, and whether Harry Reid ends up facing her or Teapartier Sharon Angle, it's increasingly looking like a race he could win.
