with his daughter, who has broken her arm. He is lucky and rich enough to have medical insurance covering his family and presents his card so showing.
The hospital at which he presents is a private hospital. It is the only hospital with an emergency room for 100 miles.
The admissions clerk does as he is instructed to do. Since the hospital does not accept Jews, he looks at Stossel and his daughter and concludes they appear to be Jewish. He asks, "are you Jewish?" Stossel demurs. He asks Stossel if he has any document, preferably self-authenticating, that indicates his religion is something other than Jewish. Stossel demurs again.
According to Stossel's own Constitutional and libertarian philosophy, does the government have a right to legislatively intervene--should his daughter be treated or should he be instructed to seek medical care at a public hospital, a 100 miles away?
