This week is Fleet Week in New York City celebrating the men, women and tonnage of the United States Navy, United States Coast Guard, and a few Marines. Most of the vessels docking in New York Harbor this week are based at Naval Base Norfolk and include:
Hampton Roads-based ships participating in this year’s Fleet Week commemoration are the multi-purpose amphibious assault ship USS Iwo Jima (LHD 7), the guided-missile destroyer USS James E. Williams (DDG 95), and patrol coastal ships USS Tempest (PC 2), USS Monsoon (PC 4) and the USS Squall (PC 7). Also participating is the guided-missile cruiser USS Philippine Sea (CG 58), homeported in Mayport, Fla. USS Iwo Jima will be berthed in Manhattan; and the rest of the Navy ships will be berthed at Staten Island.
An additional Canadian ship, the destroyer HMCS Athabaskan also docked in New York this week.
