In the aftermath of an Israeli attack on a flotilla of 10,000 tons of aid and over 600 humanitarians, the rest of the world is pissed. Take a look at some reactions.
UN Secretary General Ban-Ki-Moon:
"It is vital that there is a full investigation to determine exactly how this bloodshed took place. I believe Israel must urgently provide a full explanation."
"I am shocked by reports of killings and injuries of people on boats carrying supplies for Gaza."
German Government Spokesman Ulrich Wilhelm:
"The German government is shocked by events in the international waters by Gaza."
Italian Foreign Minister Franco Frattini:
"I deplore in the strongest terms the killing of civilians. This is certainly a grave act."
Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu:
called the raid murder conducted by a state and demanded an immediate Israeli apology, an urgent inquiry, international legal action against the authorities and perpetrators responsible, and an end to the Gaza blockade.
Compare this to the timid responses from the center-right British and American governments.
U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman John Kerry:
"At this point, it is unclear what happened and there must be a thorough investigation. This unfortunate incident underscores the necessity of resolving the conflict between Israel and the Palestinians."
UK Foreign Secretary William Hague:
"We have consistently advised against attempting to access Gaza in this way because of the risks involved. But, at the same time, there is a clear need for Israel to act with restraint and in line with international obligations."
This assault, whether warranted or not, will have a profound affect on the Middle East. The US and Obama need to restrain Israel or cut relations. We can't afford to do otherwise, especially if we ever plan on leaving Iraq or Afghanistan. (assuming Obama wants too...)
