I ask this question of the majority of humanity in general, and of the citizens of the United States in particular.
Yesterday, I was going to write a gbcw diary because I felt that people here weren't getting some of the most obvious and blatant facts that confront us at this time.
Today, I'm seeing a very slight ray of hope. I notice diaries and comments that seem to imply that people are actually noticing what's going on, and perhaps even starting to get ready to take action.
Follow me below the fold as I explain what I'm feeling right now.
There is a site that I sometimes go to, and that I went to yesterday, just to watch the numbers roll. Yesterday, the numbers rolled beyond 1 trillion.
$1 trillion. If you earned $1 million every day, you'd have to live 1 million days to earn that kind of money. It's an almost inconceivable sum, and the United States has just spent that on two useless, illegal, and unnecessary wars.
Had we, as a nation, spent that kind of money on socially productive causes, we could have made Iraq, Afghanistan, and the United States into the 3 most modern countries in the world. We could have 21st-century infrastructure instead of 19th century infrastructure. We could have healthcare that countries like Sweden would envy. Like Sweden, we could have free education through college. We could have so many more social causes paid for, and now that will not happen. It will not happen because we have wasted that money on two totally useless wars launched by an immature poser and his lying VP, supported and abetted by politicians in the pay of the lobbyists of a military-industrial complex that comprises the most successful corporations in the United States. Those are the corporations that never feel the recession, and they've been controlling our history since the 1940s.
Today, I read a diary that actually gave me hope that the people on this site actually have noticed that something is terribly wrong with our spending priorities. This diary, written by my friend OPOL, states exactly like it is, and in the comments I noticed that people were actually getting what he was talking about, the incredible waste that has only enriched the corporations that supply military goods and services, while education, infrastructure, health care, and alternative energy have to beg for funds to continue operating.
I noticed other signs of life as well, signs of the emergence of consciousness. I really don't want to go into them now, but perhaps the disaster in the Gulf, the attack on the convoy bringing peaceful supplies to Gaza, the absolute robbery that has been perpetrated by banks and corporations, and other blatant crimes against humanity are finally becoming so obvious that even willfully ignorant people finally have to acknowledge that something is going on. Something really serious.
I've written quite a few times before in various diaries that disappeared quite quickly about the intense situation that we face as a country and as humans. I sometimes get the feeling that people here, for the most part, would rather ignore the facts that are staring us in the face. In our desire to elect Democrats, we have sometimes tended to ignore important happenings that affect this country and the whole world, and the people who call themselves Democrats but are actually politicians with no political loyalty or affiliation except to their own wallets.
at this stage I am starting to realize that, although it's true that there is a difference between Republicans and Democrats, there is really not a great difference for the most part when it comes to serving, and being served by, the lobbyists of the banks, military suppliers, petroleum industries, and religious zealots of whatever form. We are amazed at the exceptions to this rule, politicians who actually believe in honesty and in serving the people, the country, and the world.
I'm hoping that people here and everywhere will take notice of the crimes that are being committed against all of us. I'm hoping that somehow we can find a way to steer our country and the world towards peace, love, and prosperity. And I really want to believe that the people that we remember on Memorial Day died so that we may have a better country and a better world.
Peace.
